ROLAND WEGERER

Performance based Media Art

“The Hummerbichler Series” is a captivating set of three video performances created by Roland Wegerer in 2014. Each video, presented in a 16:9 format with durations of 2:23, 4:03, and 3:49 minutes respectively, features sound and immerses viewers in a surreal and intense visual experience.

Central to these videos is the character of the Hummerbichler, a mysterious and enigmatic figure developed specifically for this series. The entire scenes are bathed in an intense red hue, creating a striking and otherworldly atmosphere that heightens the sense of alienation and exploration.

The Hummerbichler is portrayed as a strange, alien-like entity navigating and investigating abandoned, unknown habitats. Throughout the series, this character continuously transforms its appearance, emphasizing themes of identity, adaptation, and the search for orientation in unfamiliar environments. The figure’s fluid and evolving form challenges viewers to question notions of self and otherness.

The use of intense red coloring and the alien figure aligns with Wegerer’s concept of expanded sculpture, where boundaries between media dissolve and artworks become dynamic, immersive experiences. The Hummerbichler’s exploration of abandoned spaces without providing clear answers invites viewers to engage in their own interpretations, reflecting Wegerer’s interest in ambiguity, transformation, and the unknown.
