Artist Statement
Roland Wegerer (b. 1974, Amstetten, Austria) is an artist known for his media artworks, photographs, sculptures, and performances. By exploring the concept of movement, Wegerer seeks to understand language, transforming it into an ornamental art form. This transformation brings to light the inherent ambiguities of language.
Wegerer’s media artworks highlight the challenges of communication and its role in visualizing reality. His work delves into the dissonance between form and content, and the dysfunctions of language, emphasizing the lack of clear references.
On a meta-level, Wegerer investigates language, contemplating the mortality of an artwork against the power of its fleeting appearance, which gains intensity through its temporal limitations.
He isolates the movements of humans and objects, creating new sequences that reveal the inseparable relationship between motion and sound. Using various contemporary strategies, Wegerer finds that movement exposes an inherent awkwardness and humor that reflects our vulnerabilities. He also views movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking human experience marked by continuous loss.
Through strict rules, Wegerer creates works that can be seen as liberating constraints, neutralizing and putting into perspective romantic values such as inspiration, genius, and authenticity.
Roland Wegerer currently lives and works in Linz, Austria.
