This 2018 series of digital collages by Roland Wegerer explores the intersection of self-portraiture, glitch art, and digital manipulation, pushing the boundaries of contemporary photographic art. Each work in the series measures 30×30 cm and is presented as a C-Print, ensuring vibrant color and lasting quality for collectors and enthusiasts.
Wegerer takes the ubiquitous phenomenon of selfies far beyond their typical scope by subjecting his own self-portraits to a process of digital transformation and deformation. Using mobile apps, he deliberately distorts, fragments, and reconfigures his image, embracing technical “errors” and the visual language of glitch art. Through this approach, the artist breaks away from traditional narratives surrounding image, storytelling, and self-optimization.
“Questions about image, storytelling and self-optimization are ignored.”
Instead, these works focus on the raw, intuitive act of digital creation. By removing the familiar quest for perfection, identity curation, and narrative coherence often associated with selfie culture, Wegerer’s series highlights the rupture and randomness inherent in digital processes. The resulting images invite viewers to reflect on the aesthetics of imperfection and our relationship with technology.
