In the video work “Gold Gold Gold”, Roland Wegerer presents a minimalist yet deeply provocative performance that explores the boundaries of the human body, materiality, and social codes. The video, presented in a continuous loop, features the artist against a stark black background. Only a portion of Wegerer’s head is visible at the left edge of the frame, with particular focus on his mouth. As the mouth slowly opens, a stream of golden honey begins to emerge horizontally from the mouth cavity, forming a delicate, thread-like jet. The honey extends outward until it becomes almost impossibly thin, then, in a reversal of the action, it is gradually drawn back into the mouth. This process is repeated rhythmically, creating a hypnotic and unsettling cycle.
Wegerer’s choice of honey is deliberate and layered with meaning. Honey, with its associations of sweetness, luxury, and value—often referred to as “liquid gold”—serves as both a visual and symbolic counterpoint to the visceral act of oral expulsion and reabsorption. The golden substance, set against the deep black background, becomes almost iconic, drawing attention to the tension between attraction and repulsion, desire and disgust.
The mute presentation of the video intensifies the viewer’s focus on the visual and performative aspects, stripping away narrative and language to foreground the materiality of the act. The slow, deliberate movement of the honey, combined with the repetition of the loop, creates a meditative yet uneasy atmosphere. For some viewers, the work may evoke a sense of discomfort or even disgust, challenging them to confront their own boundaries and reactions.
